First of all, prepare spiritually. When the economy collapses you WILL need the comfort of faith. Your mental and spiritual health will guide all your steps. Many will crumble mentally as we will have never known this level of crisis. Learn what coping skills work best for you. Some may pray or walk or relax with a book, etc., find a way to calm yourself on a day to day basis. Practice these skills now to make them your tools in crisis.
Find like minded friends and work together with them preparing.
Of course we all know a year minimum of food, including NON-hybrid seeds, a PLAN for a permanant water supply. Guns, too much ammo, silver and gold. These are the four G's, God, groceries, guns and gold.
It is extremely important that you learn survival skills in the event that we lose electricity. Learn how to cook without an oven, how to protect yourself, how to treat yourself if a hospital is not an option, etc.. Spend 5 hours a week watching "how to" youtubes, write down what you have learned and keep a notebook of it.
Question everything. Do not trust this fascist govt..
Yes she's a beautiful anchorwoman but she's probably lying to you! That includes Fox News. Television is one of your worst enemies, they can make good appear evil and evil appear good. Turn it off.
Remember the govt. is the enemy of your savings.
For more info. on a complete guide to preparing go to, www.spiritwars.net
PRAY FOR CHRIST'S PROTECTION.

Ha ha this is so funny. Only a stupid moron would believe this. And only someone selling silver coins would say it.

My spouse and I absolutely love your blog and find nearly all of your post's to be precisely what I'm looking for. Does one offer guest writers to write content to suit your needs? I wouldn't mind publishing a post or elaborating on most of the subjects you write regarding here. Again, awesome blog!

Just a quick add; Get guns in the same cal. My suggestions would be 5.56, .22, 9mm, 12 guage. These are cheap and very easy to find.

Oh and tarps and Duct tape

I am a vet and a father of a new one year old child and a 8yr running faithful husband and I for some time have been tossing around the idea of stocking up food but my limited middle class budget doesent allow much room for extras like being in the negatives each month. I must say I am one of those people who was young and nieve and fell for the yeah you can aford this house on your budget. well I didnt see the loss in income when I lost a job and the wife got pregnant and she lost her job at the local relastate agency due to the housing crash. But all and all we are still making it ok. Thanks to the lord. Ok so thats my situation so enough about me I was wondering if any one had any info on the basics of starting to prepare like a grocery list on a supply list. I was taught at a very young age how to hunt and fish and sow and care for a garden thanks to my loving grandfather who @ 87 still does these thing on a dayly basis. I have a garden every spring and the early part of fall. and I try to hunt and fish as much as I have time for but with a little baby around it is not so easy. I live in a town in florida that is surrounded by militay and people and not much land to hunt on. but my thing is I have only the food in my pantry and the silver in my safe and the ammo in my drawer and not much of any of it I might add. I do have some land In the state of arkansa but I hardly ever get to see it or let alone think about building safe house or refuge for my family there. I live to far away for one thing and I know that sounds like an excuse but Its really hard for me to set a side time and money to go any where other than work and to the store. I was wondering if there was an economical collapse how would living in the middle of a bunch of military beneft or hurt me if I where to leave to go to my property to live out my days so to speak how hard is it going to be to barter for food and gas to get to my destination and once there I have no home or electricity or plumming so I would have to start from scratch and build a home the old fashioned way. which may not be such a bad thing I could stand to loss a few pounds. But do you know how long it takes a log to cure so you can build a house like a year. thats a long time to live in a car or a tent if the tent last that long. I have springs on that property but I have the faintes clue on how to pipe that water to a tank for storage or use. My main concern is taking care of my child and making sure they get to live a life with out being in fear of there fellow man but I am afraid that there life will be a lot harder than I can imagine. I hope for our countrys sake that we come out of this mess a stronger more cristian based contry. Like our Fathers so long ago intended it to be. some where we lost our way and I am afraid we will have to reap what we have sown as a super power.

Most of this network with your neighbour ideology is noble and good but it is suicide in practice. No one I ever showed the facts to, showed my PM's and preps to ever got it. They were drones, worker bees in the system and all I achieved was to expose myself and the fact that I prepared to dozens of people who are not prepared.
For 2 years now I have been undoing my mistake and telling these same good folk how I have been eating through my food stores (because they are going bad) and selling my PM's before the bubble pops. I tell them I'm buying mining shares but only if they ask.

I have been through natural disasters (Loma Prieta Earthquake) and have seen how thin the veneer of civilization really is. Total disregard for others is the first to surface. It's like yelling "fire" in a movie theatre. Panic ensues. Those that are unprepared (emotionally as well as personally) will be the first to succumb.
It took me 2 hours to get home after the earthquake. It was pitch black, sirens wailing, smell of gas everywhere, fires in the distance, people driving madly, people running into stores and looting... When I rounded the corner of my neighborhood, I saw my house with lights on and 4 cars parked in front. My friends had all mad a beeline for my house. My roomate had fired up the generator and everyone was drinking Jack Daniels at my bar. It pays to have a friend who is a avid outdoorsman, camper, hunter, fisherman and a 2 weeks supply of food and booze, guns, a generator, surgical kit, and medical supplies. A neigbor sustained a deep cut that required stitiches, another neighbor, a nurse was attending her. I offered my medkit and she was stiched up and drinking a beer at the same time. Help friends and neighbors, it will payoff in the long run.

Prepping means primarily financially prepping yourself. The odds riots in the streets or societal breakdown are nil.

That said, moderate physical gold positions are good. Keep cash for stocks when priced right. Standard blue chips with decent dividends are not going anywhere.

Otherwise, tap your 401K for cash before Congress loots it. Get some land. Learn how to garden, process meat. Ideally find a rural community within commuting distance to an urban location for work. Make connections in the community, participate. Rural towns really do help each other, but they have to know you.

A .22LR, a shotgun, 10 acres, and a handpump well are all you really need to feed yourself. If you think you need firearms for self defense then you picked the wrong place to like and are sunk.

I have a 1 year old, I've downloaded survival manuals and got a small stock of food and water but only for a few days. I live in an apartment, but I'm not impoverished, my husband is in the Navy, I'm assuming that if this happens I won't have him because he will either be called on to go to war or to control the masses, I haven't been trained in anything, I don't know how to hunt nor do I own a gun, but I'm thinking of getting one now. My husband would think I was crazy if I started spending all of our money on camping and hunting equipment and I don't know how to explain all of this to him so that he could understand, he thinks everything will be fine. I'm a strong person mentally and can be innovative when I need to be, but I'm not sure that I would be able to take care of a baby in the woods, what should someone like me do when this happens, I want to protect my child at all costs. How am I supposed to do this? Or are we just doomed?

I live in an apartment, but I’m not impoverished, my husband is in the Navy, I’m assuming that if this happens I won’t have him because he will either be called on to go to war or to control the masses, I haven’t been trained in anything, I don’t know how to hunt nor do I own a gun, but I’m thinking of getting one now. My husband would think I was crazy if I started spending all of our money on camping and hunting equipment and I don’t know how to explain all of this to him so that he could understand, he thinks everything will be fine. I’m a strong person mentally and can be innovative when I need to be, but I’m not sure that I would be able to take care of a baby in the woods, what should someone like me do when this happens, I want to protect my child at all costs. How am I supposed to do this? Or are we just doomed?

Thanks for some great idea's on how to survive what ever is coming down the road. For me and my family we're doing what we can to protect our family and doing our best "to be Prepared" I can not vision a time when we will just give up and not try to protect our family and help who we can. We have a medically involved family member and find that bugging out is going to be really hard. Yes if the water starts to rise we will have to get out of dodge. I think that people will go back to a system of bartering, so old junk coins can be exchanged for goods and service. anyway the best to everyone and thanks for letting me have my say. God bless America. Southern Patriot

MORE of us understand the how but few see the "real" why. Yes, evil men behind many governments actually worship satan. This unseen creation of god is doing his best to turn mankind away from goodness and our creators laws. There is no way other than direct intervention for this to stop. This evil must run it's course. Our only protection is prayer. Then a great war called armageddon will be brought upon this evil being and death will be his end. The men behind these ungodly governments shall also be gone. After this a paradise will be the reward for those that follow Him.We live in the foretold time of the end. Nothing else matters now-------------------------------

This may also be a time to good toward one who is in need. Sharing with others who need food or water or other necessities. If someone where to approach your house looking for these things would you whip out your semi-auto and start shooting or would you listen and provide for them what they need? Put yourself in the shoes of those who may approach you for assistance, rather than hoarding for yourselves. It is charity that will change the face of the society and defeat evil and it starts with you. I am not judging people intentions but it deserves some thought.

Thanks for the tips I decided to write down a list of items and make 2 bug out bags. That way me and a friend of mine will allways be prepared for anything. At least we'll have more chances of surviving.

Just a tip, I would include one of those things (magnesium bars?) that create sparks to build a fire without matches or lighters.

Cheers

I bought from Provident. Quick shipping but some items not in as good of condition. The silver bullet bar was scratched on front and back. Morgan dimes listed as being in good condition were not, features not even visible on a few. They charge tax where APMEX does not but APMEX shipping is too high plus their prices are higher. When comparing those two dealers, pricing is close because of tax with Provident. Looking for an alternative to buy from but all in all, Provident is quick to ship and all my other items were in very good condition.

As for purchasing precious metals when you have little or no funds available: I have about $50,000 available to me on credit cards. I am going to take $25,000 and buy Silver Eagles. The other $25,000 I will use to purchase gold buffaloes. Within a year I expect the price of gold and silver will be so much higher I will take a relatively small amount of my precious metal, sell it and easily pay off the $50,000 and sit on the rest. Or I could file bankruptcy and pay none of the money back. Or if things get really bad I won't have to pay any of it back because the banks will no longer exist.
Does any one see a downside to this plan?

Its August, 2011 and silver is at $39.01 per oz. It has been moving around a lot. Gold is over $1,700.

I've decided to invest in silver - more affordable, altho seems more volatile in the market, but I think its a good hedge and a good place to start.

I have noticed the several online bullion dealers are having trouble delivering silver. For example, it will show the coinage or bar available, but then delivery is a month later.

Tells me silver is getting in short supply. I'd rather buy gold, but not at today's price.

I am in Canada and am not convinced that a world wide economic collapse is inevitable, but things are not looking good as I write this. The community I live in has a long history of helping each other in hard times. I worry less about defending myself than surviving a natural disaster or having food/water be inaccessible. I have started stocking up canned food and bottled water little by little. I am also buying camping supplies and have convinced my husband to start camping as a recreational activity with the ulterior motive of learning to live with less and surviving a disaster situation. We also joined a farming co-op . If things went really bad, a few chickens and a goat could help a lot. Also hunting and fishing. Being a vegetarian will be huge help. I agree with whoever said all we really need is food, water and shelter ( I am done propagating lol). That said, I have slowly built up a very tiny solar system that will power my cell phone and laptop. As for the people who had were disabled or had were in charge of people with disabilities, you would be surprised what you are capable of if you need to be. Do what you can to prepare and get yourself and your loved ones as healthy as you can. Learn about natural remedies. I have arthritis but have recently lost 22 pounds and counting. I truly believe that is a great way to prepare all the way around if you need to lose weight. I am an optimist and a survivor , I believe there are huge changes coming both economically and physical changes in the earth but ultimately the world will be a better healthier place for all of us to live. Our lives will be radically different but we will be much happier and so will the planet. I think we are going back to more local living but with global communications. I am not looking forward to the shake up but am looking forward for the end result. A more simple way of life that has us "living lightly on the earth".

My great grand mother in the 20's (in Austria) needed more money, sold her house, next day hyper inflation hit and she could only buy 1 loaf of bread for the value of the house.

suggestion, keep your house. hopefully you have locked in fixed interest rate. this will survive hyper inflation. may you will be able to pay off your house during that time.

...just a thought.

and regarding safety and riots... military took over power and controlled major check points in Austria at that time. live rural, all good and fine, but how realistic is that for you? you need people around you. being alone is not always best.

the most important thing was not mentioned here a lot, pray and humble yourself before GOD. He is the only one that can prevail and help us to live free and in safety. And I believe in His miracles and his support.

And in my opinion, it is also my suggestion to you, whatever happens, it is not going to be a bad thing. There are always new opportunities arising every time one thing or period ends or closes down. this is the fun part in life, we can remember always Tom Hanks in "forest gump", life is like a box of chocolate.

I thank my God for all up's and down's. They are a reminder to pray to Him always.

God's Speed.

When saying that precius metals is the way to go in a total economic collapse it is implied that the collapse is not total. Precious metals is also a sort of currency and there are no rule that it cannot loose its value or most of it just because it never happend. In a total collapse, life sustaining neccesities is what will have value.

I have been following this whole financial problem in the United States in relation to Bible prophecy. I read several articles that point to the US not being involved in the End Time events. One article refers to the upcoming events that will happen in the next year: http://howlongolord.com/?p=36

Out of all the prophecies in the Bible, all have been precise and happened exactly as foretold.

From Forbes Magazine:

Muslim Prophecy

forbes magazine link

“Is Barack Obama the ‘promised warrior’ coming to help the Hidden Imam of Shiite Muslims conquer the world?” asked columnist Amir Taheri in Forbes. “The question has made the rounds in Iran since last month, when a pro-government website published a Hadith (or tradition) from a Shiite text of the 17th century. The tradition comes from Bahar al-Anvar (meaning Oceans of Light) by Mullah Majlisi, a magnum opus in 132 volumes and the basis of modern Shiite Islam.

“According to the tradition, Imam Ali Ibn Abi-Talib (the prophet’s cousin and son-in-law) prophesied that at the End of Times and just before the return of the Mahdi, the Ultimate Saviour, a ‘tall black man will assume the reins of government in the West.’ Commanding ‘the strongest army on earth,’ the new ruler in the West will carry ‘a clear sign’ from the third imam, whose name was Hussein Ibn Ali. The tradition concludes: ‘Shiites should have no doubt that he is with us.’”

The Khomeinist establishment in Iran sees Obama’s rise as another sign of the West’s decline and the triumph of Islam and the return of the Mahdi.

I don't have alot of survival supplies but I do have some. Mostly I need more food. My question is why do I read so much on these sites about getting out of debt? When the economic collapse happens it will most likely be followed by social collapse and then a reset after a period of time. With people just trying to survive why would anyone care about debt? I don't think the banks or the government is going to come looking for people who are not able to make payments on their debt when the whole country is imploding. Am I missing something?

Bought two 1 troy oz silver coins from Ebay today. I live in a small area with only two coin shops which deal more in collectible currency, so i was quite disappointed with the selection of silver and gold bullion rounds and bars, BUT, in the end i figure the value in the weight is the same if its a generic bar/round or an art bar/round. I paid $38.00 at the store, and will not pay more than $42 on ebay including shipping. I looked online at Apmex, Sunshine Mint and others but found the prices after shipping were too high when buying in small quantities. I lost $10,000 between an IRA and 401k a few years ago...wish back then i would have used that money to buy bullions. i'm no longer putting $$$ into my 401k and will start buying rounds/bars every paycheck.

I mean I'm suprised no one actually bothers to question why this is happening, and continues to happen, and if we're all so intelligent and can see the patterns so clearly, I wonder why none of us have even one single idea to prevent it happening yet again?

Personally the BIG question is this, is survival that important? Do we deserve it?

If mankind has no purpose, do we really deserve to be here?

THIS IS A WAKE UP CALL

Its actually as simple as it is hard. It changes for everyone.

Try to get away from big cities. Well that is easier said then done. Do what you can. Rent some little barn or something. Just somewhere you can be out of the city. You already see social collapse and decay. Don't be around IF it really goes bad. If its just hyper-inflation and economic with viens of order and people are not starving to death then the riots and civil unrest will be around, but not lethal to everyone. However having a garden or something outside the city give you a place to go, and a way to get some food.

Stock up on what you can. I tell people just go to the store like always. Sometimes buy 2 of things you need. Soup on sale? An extra bag of TP or Deo. Your still going to use all this stuff. If prices sky rocket, then you saved some money. They certainly won't be going down dramatically over the next 50 years.

Store some water. Even the CDC, and Fema recommend you store food and water.

Then you have to get more specific on what you think the problem is going to be economiclly. Complete collapse, hyper inflation, ect.
Not as an investment, but as a hedge I would suggest you read up on getting some money out of the US dollar. Do your own homework. This can be gold/silver. It can be Foriegn exchange (watch those premiums). It can be foriegn CD's, bonds, and so on. FL, I bet has a ton of banks, and you should easily find 5 that will sell you something forign. Like an Aussie CD or market account.

The hard part is this issue, if set off, will be global. Do your homework.

Wow. Interesting comments.
I believe JC is right to a degree, but missing the whole entire point and big picture, and most everything in-between.
Issac, I can understand why you feel this way, but it’s not all correct either.

What you have here is a collection of people, quite a minority of the mass of public, who see a problem. Some see it different, and for different reasons.
For some it may be the unsustainable debit. Others the debt ceiling, The Fed, inflation, loss of freedoms, and whatever. If you don’t see any indicators that trouble of sorts is around the corner, you are far behind the curve, indoctrinated by propaganda, and in the most trouble.
Because this list is growing, and each of their circumstances are growing critical you have those awake and paying attention now looking for help and ideas and likeminded folks for ideas and info.
Everyone here, while agreeing on some points and not others, came looking for some ideas or research. Be ideas what to stock up on, help painting the picture of what such a crisis would look like, or others to join up with.
The point is they are all reading, researching, and learning. But why? It is simple. In THIS country we have had relative stability for so long (lifetime perspective) that for most what such a crisis would look like is hard to imagine. You cannot plan or prepare for something you don’t understand. I personally think it is great that people are trying to learn, and even if on the wrong track, they are leaps and bounds ahead of those who think life will always be manicures and perms and hot showers.
So for people like issac who are trying, and those who just want to whine that there are people out there who think it’s all about to collapse let me say this. If you want to know the future, read the History. Boy I never thought I would say that. In fact I was the kid who said I will never use this in school.
Issac. Stores will pop up all over the place that will barter or exchange. Near me there are already 6. I got a gene store, chainsaws and service type that has a sign in the door saying they will buy your gold or silver. You won’t be shaving anything, you will trade it in for the spot price of that metal and use the cash for your purchase, or just use the metal directly. States are already legalizing other tenders and stores are already offering to take your gold and silver instead of cash.
For those who don’t have money to prepare and wonder what they can do. It’s a harder battle, no one denies you that. However know that even people with money struggle as well as it can be overwhelming. The point is simply, do what you can, when you can. You would be surprised how quickly it adds up. I know you read over that statement with a super sense of yeah right. It really does and you really need to understand this. Do what you can, don’t break the bank, don’t get in a position where you can’t make rent because you bought a years supply of food. Do what you can, and soon over time you will begin to feel better.
I have to comment on JC’s post. You are leaving out all the relevant facts. World food inventories were at dangerous levels before the floods, tornado’s and volcano’s this year. That is according to the World health organization. Where do you imagine it is now, that they chose to break the levies in the south to flood farms to save lots of houses for example. Enough food for everyone? You should do some more homework. Where is everyone going to get this food? Off the back of a truck of FEMA or the red cross? Yeah that might look doable when its just a tornado in Joplin, but the whole nation? Yeah you should do some more homework.
People, ALL PEOPLE, have 3 basic Needs. 1. Food and water. 2. Shelter. 3. Propagation. When these are threatened even the best, most honorable, and god fearing man will kill. We can all strive for a euphoric world with no problems, but to dismiss this fact could prove fatal. When people are starving, sociological laws are the first to go out the door. When they are nearing death, moral laws will go too. Humans have a distinct ability to rationalize anything, and understanding that this includes killing you so they can live is key.
At the end of the day, What it all boils down to, can be said in very simple terms. Regardless of the trigger, regardless of the event, regardless of the outcome. The more dependent on others you are, the more hosed you will be. If you can’t provide food and water and shelter for yourself you really need to re-evaluate your direction. At the same token, you cannot survive alone. While years can go by with you living alone, sooner or later you will be outnumbered or unequipped. So strive for independence, but accept local likeminded neighbors who have something you need, and hope you have something they need as well. We can still be charitable to kind folks, but your whole world of who you trust, and when will be tested.
Look to past nations who dealt with social collapse, inflation, political coo’s, or sever hardships. Talk to people who survived these events, how they did it, and how it changed them and how they look at life. I have talked to people who survived the economic collapse of the USSR, others from inflation in Brazil, and the holocaust and on and on. If you really want ideas what/how to prepare for incase, you cannot imagine the things no-one is thinking of that people who lived through these events found to be of value.

Oh. And plant a garden. Cheap, easy, and of no downside. If your poor and this is all you can do, sleep well for you are LEAPS ahead of everyone else.

Thanks to all for your efforts. Anyone who doesn't think this economic turmoil won't happen, needs a history lesson. Government doesn't create wealth, Government TRANFERS wealth. Always to its corrupt allies. Understanding fiat economies and government's insatiable quest for power and control is imperitive. The first steps are ALWAYS GUN CONTROL. I will make it very simple to understand:

All political power comes from the barrel of a gun. The communist party must command all the guns, that way, no guns can be used to command the party.

OMG! What are you people on? You guys have been watching too many movies! So let me get this straight: all of a sudden, the U.S. is a scene out of the Book of Eli or some crappy zombie movie, right? LOL

In many (if not most) countries on Earth (yes, that same planet where there are around 200 other countries besides the U.S....) people have actually lived on that same food (rice, beans, wheat...) that you so dramatically stock for survival, for many many centuries! Some of those countries are closer than you think: Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and South America all have grains like rice, beans and corn tortillas as their basic diet. And if you look at Africa of Asia, more of the same or even less...millions of people!
If or when the U.S. collapses, you guys are going to have to face the fact that you'll no longer be the world's no. 1 economic and military super power, which doesn't mean that people are automatically going to start running around killing each other for food! For God sake's, there are some 6 billion people that eat everyday without having to kill anyone! I believe, for now (the world's food supply, overpopulation and starvation in some undeveloped countries is another issue), it's safe to say there's enough food for everyone. Being no. 2 or no. 100 only means you probably won't be able to dine or take out every other day, buy an iPod, iPad, iPhone, iMac, 100-inch flat screen, home theater, TIVO, PS3, Xbox, 2 SUV's, 2-door fridge, microwave and conventional ovens, washing machine, dryer (OMG!!! you are going to have to dry your clothes out in the sun!! NOOOOOO!!!!)...and every other piece of junk they sell you on TV with money you didn't actually have in the first place....like up until a few years ago, most americans did. Most of the WORLD (even industrialized first-world countries) gets through their lives without any of this!
I pity the fact that you spoiled brats really just can't wait for the lamest excuse to take out your personal arsenal and blow each other's head off with your $500 stock of precious little green-tipped bullets......for beans!
Just get off the high horse you've been riding for nearly a century and deal with it! It's the circle of life: there have been political, economical and military super powers through out human history, and I believe there are still some arabs, greeks, egyptians, italians, germans, spanish, british and french in some parts or the world...or did they suddenly become extinct once their empire fell?
After the ride you guys have had, you still don't get it. It's not "survival", "evacuation" or "organized communities with 24-hour watch posts"...it's especially NOW when you guys should be thinking of helping each other out, instead of shooting the first guy asking for help. Really...it's just sad.
I wish every one of you guys good luck. I personally have many american friends and know for fact they don't agree with the views posted here (thank God!). I just hope they don't run into one of your little "communities" when all this goes down.
Peace.

"Hello again friends. The time has come for everything to fall into place. March 15 2011 is the day the dollar will die along with our country as well. A pole shift of 40 degrees is said to occur as well. I believe that this may indeed happen. In the event you readers believe me please bug out now. I myself am leaving the city very soon. Get away from the new Madrid fault and at least 300 miles from the coastline. Any questions, issues, or comments please contact me. (304)-731-7106. Good luck to you all."

Today is 6/13/11...looks like the above failed to happen.

If you are in poverty, get a better job. Stop making excuses and work, then work some more. Guess how people in third world countries survive- they work for the meager scrapes of food they get. Quit living off the efforts of someone else- contribute.

Why are you in poverty? You are not willing to sacrifice to win. You are a bum. You are disabled. You are mentally challenged, elderly, lazy, stupid, addicted to drugs- the worst and most devastatingly harmful drug is self-pity.

Get over the excuses and get off the couch. Do something with your life.

Wealthy or poor, if you want to survive, get off your butt and do something- anything. A resourceful person could be dropped off in the jungle and survive. This is hardly a jungle. The lazy, will not survive. Excuses will not feed you. Whining will not save you. Selfishness will only ruin your life.

If you think you are in poverty because you don't have as many iPods as the Jone's, or a ten thousand dollar car, or any number of things that would be completely worthless in a world of less, go back to the tv induced coma you live for.

Yup, this is all great stuff, however, after the first 3 months, all the grasshoppers starving out there will see you don't look as bad as they do and target you and yours for "exploitation", you good little ant, you. And guess who the biggest grasshopper will be? Your wonderful city, county, state and federal governments.
You will be labeled a hoarder. At best you will have everything confiscated, including your weapons, and at worst, you'll be put up against a wall and shot. I figure the latter is most likely.
Then, your idea about gold and silver. Well if the collapse is as big as you/we figure, why do you feel those items will have any value at all? It's all in the head. Plus, say I need a couple of bushels of potatoes? Can you make change for an ounce of gold which will supposedly be worth $5XXXX? Maybe you think you can deal with shavings off your little gold piece? Better put jeweler's scales up there amongst your cans of spagettios.
Will there anyplace left to deal with your articles of exchange? Banks? Credit Unions? Jewelry stores?
Oh, lets all get together and determine what will be used for money. Dollars? Got a wheelbarrow? Use them to light fires?
You've listed some fairly important things but in total collapse, it all boils down to survival of the fittest and that will mean joining up with the meanest SOB's around, determining loyalties, etc. I'm talking PRISON mentality here. Want to see what life will be like? Go to your local penitentiary, then eliminate the guards, except the guards will be the biggest gang within the walls.
Not to mention the INEVITABLE war that will happen when the other REALLY bigshots, decide to "bring order" to America's chaos. Nope, it's not going to be fun. Heck, they'll probably even take "THE BACHELOR" off the air............

WTF!? Its too late to take any of your advice...where can i get money for all this shit without a job? Gold and silver? i got no chance of ever getting any. So, the only solution i have, and i think its a good one, is to join one of the thousands of already established communities all over the states. Theyve already set everything up, and are looking for contributers (labour and security etc)...

im afraid alot of people are already in my position, its too late for them to save any money to buy any of the stuff on your list....

What about chickens. Chickens can self feed, can be fed scraps and can be used for both meat and eggs. I am building my flock. I think eggs will be a barterable commodity.

I see good information here by people leaving comments. I figured I would add what I have done to prepare to add ideas to the pot.

I live on a farm and operate a cattle company. I have breeding stock here at the house and a feedlot near the auction barn in town. I personally do not buy into the gold/silver/metal craze. I plan to trade with beef/water/fuel/food, things people will need. I will plan to stay on my property and defend it rather than to take off on foot. I have too many supplies with more than enough people willing to defend it so they can have access to it.

I have a 10,000 gallon fuel tank that I use to fuel farm equipment with that will be good to have in crisis. Generators, solar backup, tools, satelite communication, phone, tv, internet. I have a private well and private septic and have converted all heating elements of my home to electric for use with the generator and solar power system. And if it would come down to it, I have a transfer tank in my truck with a reversible pump if I need to find a way to get more fuel.

Hunting and defense is something that concerns me. I have different types of weapons and a community that I shoot with that knows how to use them. Everything from pistols and shotguns, to semi-auto rifles, to bolt action sniper rifles and different cartridges for different needs. Medium rounds for hunting and general protection, and I have high power rounds for my sniper rifle that can disable a vehicle or penetrate armor if needed. I have friends that were in the marines. My brother and I were both army cav scouts. For ammo my brother and I both reload brass and when a gun is not necessary we have weapons that do not require ammo. Hatchets, knives, bows. You can throw hatchets and knives for food or whatever you need and close combat. I have taken bladed weapons training, classes are not hard to find. Training with these weapons will come in handy if you cannot reload ammo or eventually when supplies run out. With any system, rationing will be important, whether it is food, fuel, ammo, medical supplies.

Medical knowledge is also a concern for me. I would have to turn to my wife in this department. She is an anesthesiologist right now and works in an operating room 40 hours a week. You, by yourself, will probably not be able to survive. I know how to do alot of things, but if I needed stiched up, I would bleed to death without help. A strong community will be key in my opinion. The idea of walking into the woods with a backpack just doesn't appeal to me. It probably depends on the whole "fight or flight" theory of how different people think.

I always keep mechanical supplies in my shop too. Oil, lubricants, batteries, sprays, parts. I always have spare tires, brake pads, and grease for my truck, always.

Well that is alot of what I would plan on doing in the event of a collapse of our way of life. I left some things out, but people get the idea.

Jason is being ignorant. Sorry but imho. I said no other animal has a lower cost to keep per pound. I never said it alone would sustain you. Anyone can figure out that there is no one item that will completely balance you nutrionally. If you can keep pigs, good for you. They too will not provide EVERYTHING you need. However I bet 90% of the people that posted and future readers cannot keep pigs, but can have 2 rabbits. Also pigs may just eat scraps but they too will then lack some nutrion. Think in terms of Economic collapse, how much scraps are you going to be able to spare for a pig? Will it be enough to keep the pig alive? And after you kill your pig and make your soap, then what? Do some homework and better planning. Please.
Rabbits can be sustained for pennies to the dollar. A garden and other stored food can easily streach your food supply and balance your nutritional needs, on a renewable basis.
Wonder if Jason thinks Gold is just a bubble, or government figures of unemployment and inflation are reality.

I don't understand why some people try to tell you what not to do. Tell people what you do, help them with new ideas or leads on other areas to do homework on. Like some have posted they cannot bug out. Then you should focus on preparing for hunkering down. What works for some, won't work for others. If pigs work for you, and you have the means to raise them great. I encourage you do go that route. Then when your starving and I need a bath, i can bater with you for some soap. If we all prepared the same way, we would be found wanting.

Why can't everyone help provide ideas and options or partnerships. Instead everyone wants to dictate and act like they know best for all. Is that not what got us in this mess?

Think for yourself, or be a slave. There is no in between.

I feel very fortunate that I have found this site. From what I have seen by just the comments is that there are a great many people that are more knowledgeable than myself on this subject. There are people that have been preparing for years for the very circumstances that I am only now becoming able to prepare for. If it is any merit, These are the people that I would like to ally myself with. If anyone on here would like to discuss matters of this nature please feel free to e mail me. marvinwiita@hotmail.com

Don't listen to the person who said to buy meat rabbits. If you do research on eating just rabbit, you will find that it will eventually kill you. It doesn't have enough fat in it to sustain you. A breeding pair of pigs are a much better choice. They grow very fast, provide lard (for soap, cooking, light source, etc.). Plus they don't require feed. You can feed them scraps. Here is an interesting fact the most nutritious wild meat source is raccoon. It has plenty of fat on it plus many other nutrients. Second of all your going to have to learn to eat almost all animal parts like the Indians did. Most of the nutrients are in the entrails. Watch animals they always eat the guts first. There is a reason for that. Survival experts it is great to go out in the woods and hide, but so will a lot of other people. Those people will want to kill you to, and they will be armed. I think the ones to survive will be the ones with a balance in all aspects of life.

1. Survival knowledge: wild food recognition, utilization of anything you find, building shelter, finding water and purification, woods navigation, physical endurance (need to work out), mental health (most important), trapping, fishing, etc.

2. Homesteading preparation: salt, meat sources (chickens, pigs, goats, etc.), water sources, vegetable sources, firewood (ability to gather it), dog (protection), food preservation knowledge, guns, ability to repair clothing, know how to make leather, wild food recognition on your property, composting knowledge, garden tools, hand wood working tools, metal working tools (blacksmithing), basic medications, basic medications for animals, literature on homesteading skills, bible, alternative power sources, btw canning won't work unless you buy reusable lids (which are available), etc.

3. Money - gold, silver, and some cash. Need to be balanced. None of these will have any value unless they can be proved that they are legitimate. Will you take someone's word that it is real silver or gold? No because at this point no one will trust anyone. There are many shams on silver and gold right now make sure it isn't layered or plated.

What frustrates me is we got all this advice given to people on what to do but no one is giving advice to those in poverty or the disabled? I'm currently in both of those categories. I don't own a home in fact I barely make ends meet in a 2 bedroom apartment. I live off a 900 dollar a month income..I can't afford to buy gold or silver...some months I can't even buy food and have to depend on others for that. I don't have land or a home? What are people in poverty to do? How can I protect myself living in an apartment? Why is no one address us (people in poverty) or giving us advice on how we can prepare now in order to survive???

@Christina Angelina.....too funny girl, you just goota love those peace-love type liberals, let me see, ya..... Hitler had great gun control, you can google that one love, and oh by the way, let me think back to my college history days......."You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass." - Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto

@Smitty......Yep Army training is good, done that, survival training is also good, done quite a bit of that. Info, Intel very important. Also important to understand the Demography of where you live and have done an analysis of the area/state you live in. Further most people will only be 1 tank full of gas from where they live, so the idea of roving gangs will be mainly for the burning water and power empty cities, east of the Mississippi river, (good luck getting over that).  Also Smitty you state;

"Now if, at some time in the future, you stumble across a well organized community of people (provided their perimeter security personnel don’t shoot you out of fear)…"

Yes this is what you want to emulate, and one of those "very well" organized communities would be mine here in Montana. We won't shoot you out of fear Smitty, we are too well trained for that. We will give you a chance to join after going through a very very rigorous interview. Then if we accept you, since you did not bring any ammo, weapons, food or essential gear except for want you could carry on your back, you will be expected to pull more then your fair share.....sorry. Amateurs study tactics, professionals study logistics." Omar Bradley. You can read my write up on Demography on my site.

Sorry if I come across as a arrogant, but I've been doing this for a very long time, and will help out anyone that asks for it. Give a person a fish, feed him for a meal, teach one to fish and feed one for life.

If you are just starting out getting prepped, my site may give you some helpful info.

I've got to i had been a little leary of all hype happening around solar. After checking out quite a few programs and purchase options my husband and I chose to make the leap. We wound up getting solar without having money down and we all immediatly started putting money aside the very first month is was installed. I must say that the benefits of solar seem to be real and I am happy we chose to move forward with it.

Hi guys, I'm not an American I am Australian and I am really confused and need help.
Over here, our economy is booming, our dollar is strengthening, and many people are becoming more wealthy. Yes there is inflation to a small extent and petrol prices are rising but nothing that would cause a civil war etc.
I want to know if this would apply to Australia and if so how would Australia be affected?
Oh and by the way we were the only western country to not go into recession in the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2008 to present.
So should the same that Americans need to do apply to me here??

Sarah,
While Smitty has a point you have hit the nail on the head of why he is only accurate to a degree, all be it a large degree.

Smitty is right, but does not go far enough. You must have the ability to survive if/when you need to bug out. You need to know techniques both military and past tribal in your area as applicable.
However you must customize your survival plans around several facts. 1. That you may need to toss them all out the door and improvise. 2. That there is no one solution for all possibilities. 3. That it will vary from person to person- I.e. your parents situations.
Planning ahead provides insight on how to come out on top, or closer thereto after everything implodes and rebuilding starts. Those who depend on just survival skills will have to rely on them longer than those who had learned survival skills and invested for when the rebuilding begins.

Smitty is completely correct that you must know these skills. However learning these skills whilst preparing for other options and avenues at the same time is very do-able when done in advance. And the more you do and learn, the better off you will be.

It is also about teaching. Think about it, people do not even know how to make their own soap anymore. Cure meat in a root cellar without your bed bath and beyond food dehydrator. Canning? Yeah I would guess this is about 2% of the world population. How about medical tricks and wives tales from before the wonder of pharmacy drugs? Simple skill sets are lost to time for the masses, at least for now. Get a hold of this information, print it out and put it in a binder and memorize as much as you can.

Stock your food. Stock your gold, silver or whatever. Stash water. AMMO. Whatever you can do to better sleep at night and help others who still have their head up their butts and even laugh at you now.

The key is to be prepared, in any event. If you can bunker down at home, or if you can survive on the road. I see nothing wrong with doing both. The day may come you have to walk away from your food and home, and if you have skills and plans in advance then your cooler head will prevail.

Setup backup plans. If you have to head north or east, or whatever have a plan where you can go. Put some of your supplies there as well. The more places you have supplies stashed the better. (partnerships can help, but pose other issues as well)

The point is, there is nothing you should not do or consider in terms of preparing. There is plenty you should not do in terms of survival. See that difference. Do not stay at your house in the heart of downtown city just because you cannot accept walking away from your hard work and supplies. Do not underestimate how quickly the best of men will turn to killers to survive longer than you. It’s not human nature, its animal instinct and has happened before.

To wrap up, follow Smitty's advice. Follow others advice. Do it all to the extent you can. If this goes down as an economic issue, people will suffer and many may die, but the majority of people will (as a whole) will survive. There will also be those who will help you. It’s not that everyone is out to get you in this downturn, people will group up.

Your best bet is to look at how it has happened elsewhere before. What did people do to survive the great depression? The Weimar Republic? Russia? There are tons of examples.

If you have family that can't go mobile, then you have to plan on this fact. Perhaps you should be able to bug out sooner while cars that are on the road are not yet major targets? It’s all about what is in your ability to do now. If you can’t get a tent on the arctic shelf with a ton of supplies to stay warm and get to it before its all really bad then don't try.

Personally, I think everyone should have a wood stove, some food, a second location even less remote with similar supplies. Bug out bags with supplies to help acquire what you will need on the road, and some likeminded people to setup a network of backup plans. This is where timeshare setups seems better to me then the vacation spot of past years.

Also, while you might gag at the idea now, consider looking into meat bread rabbits. No other animal produces more meat to a lower cost of care. One breading pair can feed a family of 4 for a year. (in the depression days these people were called Hoover hogs and armadillos in the south). The meat is healthier than anything you are likely eating now. 2 years ago I would have ignored you had you said this to me. 3 years ago if I thought like this my wife would have never married me. Now we still have not eaten rabbit, nor killed any, but do have them, ready to bread with food for them for a period of time. Look into it for the bunker down at home situations.

The best way to close is to say prevention. If you see a way to prevent the collapse of the dollar, by voting or any other way, you owe it to do your part. I don't see it being avoided at this time, but as Americans you know what I mean. If you can help.. do so. Wake up your friends, and family. America has not defended its republic for too long, and this is the price.

I must say that out of all of the comments that I have read, the one by Smitty seems to make the most sense. It also seems like it would be the hardest to accomplish, because you are picking wild plants, hunting and living out in the elements, while also trying to hide from very desperate and dangerous people. I am a single, 43 year old woman, who has a 64 year old mother who is overweight with a bum knee, as a roommate. I've stumbled upon this website, as well as others like it, and I have been completely stressed out and scared about everything I've been reading!! I know there are some very valid points herein, and I'd like to prepare the best way possible, so I can survive, and come out on the other end, to be a part of the rebuilding process, if there is one. I'm a fighter and will go through the necessary hardships to survive. I'm not so much afraid of death, as I am of suffering. I just worry about my mother and her boyfriend, who are both old and not physically able to move about in the woods for survival. Contemplating...

You absolutely must have physical silver or gold in my opinion and the reason for that is banks cannot be trusted to hold your belongings. If you went with a third party secure location that doesn't want your belongings but would rather have your monthly storage fees, that would be ok in my opinion. If you are worried about having gold/silver in your house when chaos happens, just hide it well (drywall it in or get a safe that bolts the cement floor in your basement, bury it in the back yard). Or why not sell it once it rises in price - chaos will affect this rise in price... it could be a good time to sell at that point provided you find a buyer. I don't have all the answers and I can't predict the future but having the physical stuff is going to be better than not having it.

Hey jmb,
There are two sources most folks use. One is their local coin dealer. IF he is fair priced great. If you can form a relationship of trust and loyalty you have accomplished much. Then when it comes time to sell you will have a partner in a win-win situation. I have given my dealer many referrals and he is most appreciative. He is a decent human being so it works. The key is win-win, no greed.
I go to my local guy for small purchases only.

When I want to place a larger order I use APMEX. for their discounts on large orders. They are fair priced, professional, user friendly website/ordering, fast, excellent quality coins, they have been around for years and have a good reputation. I buy seconds, rounds, Buffalos, but you couldn't tell they're seconds because they ALL look new. Plus they have a 800 # in which you can call and ask all the questions you want, friendly guys there. A feature I like is they shoot me an email of my purchase agreement for my records, then another email alerting me that they have received my check with the arrival date and tracking info.. And it does arrive by the date they give, sometimes earlier.
Remember when you press send, the order is in and you have signed a contract, no changing your mind.
Also I would send a check, they do give a grace period if you are late with the check by a few days,... usually.
They also have descreet packaging and return address so the nosey letter carrier won't be telling the neighorhood you've got 20 lbs. of silver.
Free advice, .... take every extra dime and buy silver, the dollar is history.

God bless!

Dear Smitty,
You make a lot of sense. I wish I lived next door to you during survival times and I hope we all take what you said and do learn survival skills. Simple things, about skills to make a fire and protecting against hypothermia etc., is valuable However, I do believe none of us can predict the future. So storing food, water, supplies, seeds, and silver seems intelligent to me, IMHO.
The better prepared the safer we all are.
Thank you for your words of wisdom! I will do even more investigating now. We can all learn more to prepare.
God bless.
Mary Kay

I know most of you who left replies were American, but I am British and an increasing number of us have the same growing global concerns as you have. I have been telling people for many years to prepare for the day when their survival will depend on themselves. Information, knowledge and practical steps will be the key. Learn as much as possible about everything you will need to survive. Self preservation is paramount and there is very good advice in the previous replies. If you are prepared, everyone will want what you have, so keep it quiet and only make plans with those closest to you. This is not paranoia or scaremongering, this is a very real possibility, that I believe will materialize around the end of 2012, with the collapse of the Dollar. Forget possessions and focus on food, water, medical, protection, practical skills and a viable plan to remove yourself as far away as possible from the desperate hoards should be your priority.Learn and learn quickly ! Then when the dust settles, we can begin to rebuild a decent, fair and sustainable society. Here's to survival !

How many REAL survival experts talk about stocking up on ANYTHING(gold, food, etc.)? Having an excess of anything, in a real economic collapse, makes you a bigger target for those around you. All of these so-called “experts” that are peddling gold, silver, seeds, food are making tons of money based on your fear. In a situation where there is no electricity, no law, no accountability, there is only ONE thing of value…YOUR own survival skills. Think you can stay where you are and defend your stuff? You can’t stay awake 24 hours a day; and you won’t have enough ammo. In survival, it’s not how much “stuff” you have…it’s about what you can defend. And it’s about how much you can carry. All of this crap about stocking up on supplies and gold is giving you a false sense of security. How long do you think you can last before terrified and hungry people start coming to take your stuff? A week? A month? Even if you live out in the country. How long will it be before thousands of hungry people start leaving the city and roaming the country side looking for shelter and food?

If you think that “survival” means that you’re to have a house in the country with plenty of food, gold, and a solar generator…ask Randy Weaver or David Koresh how well it worked out for them. All they dealt with was a few hundred coordinated people with rifles. Change those situations to hundreds (then thousands) of hungry people and then think if you have the man-power to guard a perimeter 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Here’s some REAL survival advice. And it’s completely free. Learn the survival techniques taught to the military (ie Army Infantry, Rangers, SF, Marine Corps, Navy SEALs, etc.). Watch shows by Les Stroud and Bear Grylls. Read books or websites that teach personal survival. Learn the principals of the Light Infantry (ie staying off roads, avoiding populated areas, getting to staying in the wood line). Understand that survival is NOT about how much stuff you have to defend, but about how much stuff you can carry. Understand that survival from thousands (or millions) of hungry people will require you to be nomadic.

Change your thinking about survival. Instead of thinking “how much food do I have?” Think “what can I carry in a ruck sack that will aid me in getting food in the woods” Instead of thinking “how much water do I have?” Think “what can I carry in a ruck sack that will aid me in drinking clean water that I find?” Instead of thinking “I need to maintain shelter from the elements.” Think “what can I carry in a ruck sack that will keep me dry and give me shelter?” Instead of thinking “how many boxes of ammo can I stock?” Think “how much ammo can I carry”?

What about medical supplies? A standard “first aid” kit has a bunch of stuff that won’t need in it. Plus, which first aid kit should you get? The big one? The really big one? Which one is best? Do a little research to find out the absolute essentials needed in a survival first aid kit. Taking a Red Cross standard first aid class is worth a lot more than gold.

In short, prepare to go mobile. Prepare as if you will need to go on foot. Plan the quickest (and safest) routes from your front door to the woods. Plan at least three routes OUT of town. This means you AND your family. Everyone on foot, quietly, expediently, and smartly. Avoiding any authorities (if any still exist at that point) and contact with other people. Survive on your own or with your immediate family.

Now if, at some time in the future, you stumble across a well organized community of people (provided their perimeter security personnel don’t shoot you out of fear)…then maybe they’ll take you in. But if you don’t have any relevant skills to add to their community then they most likely won’t let you in. So you’ll have to be self sustaining until you come across a large enough community that can afford to be more accepting. But don’t count finding such a community.

People say “prepare for the worst but hope for the best”. Well I just told you how to truly prepare for the worst. And it didn’t cost you a dime.

Who am I? I was a Light Infantry Soldier that had the opportunity to get some of the best survival training that is available; also served in Iraq for a year. I was also an EMT/Paramedic for 8 years.

If you have any doubt as to whether or not the survival information that I have provided for you is correct or not…don’t ask the peddlers of gold, seeds, solar generators. Ask an Army or marine Corps Infantry Soldier, an Army Ranger, Army SF Soldier, Marine Corps Force Recon, Navy SEAL, Air Force Combat Controller, or Air Force Para-rescue. They’ll all tell you the same thing.

Hello again friends. Good luck to you all.

ADMIN. SAID: "I will be making sure to get out of silver BEFORE fiat currency is completely worthless as well."

Hmmm. Not sure if I can understanding that logic. When the dollar turns to dust that is when silver will be the most valuable.
Now if you're saying you will get last minute dollars to make store purchases, I can understand that.
However, I believe when the dollar is completely worthless silver will skyrocket and be the most common form of barter/money.
I'll hold on to my silver as long as I can.
But who really knows now what we will be doing a year from now? I'm shocked daily by this fascist govt.. Who knows what they have up their sleeves for the masses.
I think things will be clearer down the road.
Wisdom tells me to keep investing in silver no matter the cost. Only the foolish will hold on to dollars.

Admin: I am new to this site and read your entry stating you will sell your silver when everyone is buying and/or it reaches $1,000 an ounce. I don't understand what you will be selling it for. If the fiat money is worthless, what are you exchanging your silver to get while everyone is lined up to buy silver?

Hi Luis,
I think $5 premium is pretty high. Normally they earn roughly about 10 to 15% from the spot price. I suggest that you do some research for new dealers. By the way, where are you from?

It's great that you bought 3yrs ago. I wish I started 3yrs ago.

Dave, excellent post, wisdom for sure!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJNIuZOTReg&NR=1

Check out this video with Alex Jones and Pastor Lindsay Williams. It's a 5 part series but definately worth the time to listen to. It will blow you away!!

Folks silver is up to $35.96 an ounce to purchase! Get it before it explodes, which will be soon!
The Middle East is on fire and Iran is sending two warships to the Suez Canal. All this can only result in one thing, higher gas prices, which means higher food prices.
So stock up now!

God bless you all!

preppedinwestvirginia has put out some good info - the same as I follow & teach but I am surprised by his misspelling. He said he attended SIERS but its spelled SERE - which stands for Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape.

Prep now or be left wanting.

Hi, I bought 569 silver eagles back in 26th Sep 2008 at a unit price of 18.55 USD. I found out that the spot price on that date was around 13 to 13.5 USD/oz, I am planning to buy more gold and silver from the same dealer in Boca Raton but I believe, in my opinion, that the premium they charged me at that time was extremely high, 5 dollars...

What do you think about it? These people have been around for many years and I thought they were fair.

Thanks in advance for your opinion.

I enjoyed reading your comments very much. Thanks.
Might a add a few of my own? Firstly, it will be the spoiled people that panic and jump out of windows before the rest of us. The young lady that can't afford to get her nails done, women that can't afford to get there hair straightened, the man that can no longer afford or find his illicit drugs, cell phone, etc. The whine of the spoiled will be your first warning sign.

Secondly, prepare spiritually. You and your family may not be destined to survive. A bad tooth in the country will kill you. Pray for guidence and be prepared to lead.

Lastly, plan now to prosper over the coming bad years. Do not form group associations now. Wait. The signs down the road will lead you to who to associate with in the future. Survive by living conservative, seek others like you later not now. Never stand out in the crowd.

Your contented mind will guide you.

I believe I need to comment once again and this is also VERY important. These one ounce .999 silver coins spoken of from time to time are about to get scarce. The earth holds very small amounts of silver and less than 1% of the population has decided to invest. If more folks become worried about the value of the dollar they will look to gold and silver.Right now we are having trouble getting silver. As time goes on---if you wait much longer----you might not find any to buy. If you have some extra cash, go to a coin store& buy some .999 one ounce silver ROUNDS. Buy just the pure silver ROUNDS--nothing more expensive. When dollars become worthless through inflation, those silver ROUNDS might get you some food or save your life. And put food away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@peter davidson I recommend you go down to a coin shop in your city. Be careful as some shops could try and sell you the silver for far too much over spot... so, shop around to get the best prices.

Or, you can buy online. You will have to do your research to get comfortable with your online sellers as I don't know of any in the UK.

Silver coins will be worth more now than what is stated above in the article since it is already almost $30 an ounce at spot - so, there will be a premium over this.

If you really want to read a great book about silver and gold investing, check out Mike Maloney's book - it is very clear and a good guide to doing it right :)

I have looked through A LOT of survival info out there and many are awesome. But it's like this:

If the guide or course does not thoroughly explain how to set up in all situations, it's as if you aren't prepared at all.

Imagine being totally stocked up at home but being at the mall when disaster strikes!

This free survival mini-course is a lead in to the best course I've ever taken and I highly recommend it to everyone I meet.

I have been planning and stocking up for sometime now. I currently have a one year supply of food for 7 ppl. I am also a survival expert(ex-army). Have had jungle and mountain survival training and SIERS. I do believe we will see something bad happen by mid 2012 at least.

So learn all you can about survival even if just watching Man VS Wild, Bear Grylls can teach you alot.

So, i reccomend lots of guns to protect you and your loved ones, things will get crazy when people begin to panic. They WILL kill you and your family for food.

My everyday carry for this situation consists of 2- .40 Cal's, 2-.45 Cal's, 1-.38 SPL, 1-12 ga. pump and a knife. That is with three magazine's per pistol, about 120 rounds at anytime if I need it. Plus i have about 1,000 rounds per weapon stockpiled. So if I encounter a small group or kind of large group I can fend them off.

My wife will also carry 2- .380's. Plus it would be wise to have a 30-30 or 30.06 for hunting/sniper security.

If you are in a small group make sure you always have someone posted on watch 24 hours a day. Pick a spot high enough to have 360 degree security at all times. I am in a pretty good position for this event, the elevation where i live is over 3,000 ft above sea level( in case of a tsunami, etc) and also have 3 fully stocked ponds with bass, catfish you name it, 275 acres of woodland, and several freshwater springs and coal mine shafts.

I am willing and prepared to do whatever it takes to protect me and mine. ( Also one last weapon suggestion, alot of ppl think an AR-15 or M4 is the way to go, they are expensive as is the ammo. go with an AK-47 half the price for the weapon, bigger bullets and way cheaper ammo. Example: 1,000 5.56 rounds= $500.00+, 1,000 7.62 rounds=$150.

If there are any serious ppl that are awake in southern west virginia please email me if you want to get together and learn survival techniques and learn what supplies to stock. pv2burrell@live.com

Good economic times or not, precious metal investing has proven to be stable.

The only time it may not be is when food, water and shelter are all the world has left to fight for.

As long as we use an agreed upon currency for the exchange of goods and services precious metals will be valuable.
